Charlotte Bedingfeld has lived in Cambridge since 2018. Largely self-taught after studying languages at university, she returned to art in 2014. She paints landscapes and still life in oil, and creates portraits in graphite and coloured pencil.
For Charlotte, making art is a way to reconnect with beauty. Painting and drawing are visceral practices that sharpen her perception and deepen her appreciation of the world. Weekly life drawing keeps her practice rooted in accurate observation, proportion and gesture — a regular return to the essentials of mark-making.

Charlotte’s plein air oil paintings are rooted in close observation and a deep appreciation for the beauty of the everyday. Working directly from life, she captures the changing qualities of light, atmosphere and place with a fresh, responsive approach. Her paintings are intimate encounters with the landscape, shaped by the immediacy and pleasure of painting outdoors.

My journey in art
I returned to drawing in 2013 while bringing up my three children, and gradually found my way back to painting. Art became a refuge and a source of joy—a space where I could reconnect with my creativity and, quite simply, feel revived.
My practice has continued to evolve through portraiture, plein air painting and still life. I work in graphite, coloured pencil and increasingly in oils, drawn to the richness and depth of colour they offer. I’m constantly learning, challenging myself through new work, life drawing, sketching with other artists and ongoing courses.
Being part of the Cambridge Drawing Society since 2023 has also brought a wonderful sense of community and connection. My artistic journey is ongoing, and I love that there is always something new to discover.
